Geography at St Peter's

At St Peter’s, we know the importance of exploring the relationship between the earth and its people in order to make our own connections with the world around us. Our Geography lessons are tailored to our pupils and the Thames-side location in which we are lucky to be situated.

Here at St Peter's, we aim to teach the geography curriculum in a thematic and cross curricula way. A number of our whole school Topic Themes are geography based including London’s Calling and Green Planet. These Topic Themes are shared across all classes from Years One to Six and are accessed at different levels of progression.

Educational visits are integral to good geography teaching, and we include as many opportunities as we can to involve children in practical geographical research and enquiry. As well as fieldwork opportunities, we understand the importance of providing a variety of tangible resources such maps, statistics, graphs, pictures and aerial photographs plus the use of ICT where this serves to enhance children's learning.

In-line with the National Curriculum, at St Peter's we aim to:

  • Educate children about the importance of the environment and the variety of physical and human conditions on the Earth’s surface.

  • Enable pupils to make sense of their surroundings and the wider world.

  • Develop skills in mapping and the use of grid, scale and co-ordination.

  • Foster a sense of wonder at the beauty within the world.

  • Encourage a sense of responsibility for the care of the Earth and its people (promoting Sustainable Development)

  • To increase children’s knowledge of other cultures and in so doing, teach a respect and understanding of what it means to be a positive citizen in a multi-cultural society.

  • To develop a variety of skills including those of enquiry, problem solving, ICT, investigation and how to present their conclusions in the most appropriate way.

  • Use the local environment to enhance learning of geographical skills

Our teachers follow our Geography Skills and Knowledge Progression guide to ensure children make progress in the areas of:

  • Location and Place
