Phonics and EARLY reading At ST Peter's

Phonics

At St Peter's, we recognise the importance of quality phonics teaching in providing a solid foundation for learning to read and write.

We use the Twinkl phonics scheme of work, designed in-line with the National Curriculum objectives and validated by the DfE, to deliver a daily, detailed and systematic approach to teaching phonics - starting in the Early Years Foundation Stage and continuing to Year 1 (and beyond for pupils requiring further support.) This systematic, synthetic phonics programme enables our teachers to nurture a love of reading and writing and develop fluency.

Early Reading

Our Early Reading scheme closely links to our phonics scheme of work and employs the use of an extensive library of fully-decodable, diverse & dynamic books from the Twinkl library. Children are supported to progress through reading stages with the aim of becoming a 'free-reader'.
