Physical Education at St Peter's
At St. Peter’s, we believe that Physical Education makes an important and significant contribution to the provision of a broad and balanced curriculum. We value the opportunities offered by the physical education curriculum in enabling children to explore and enhance their physical skills, whilst encouraging and developing a healthy attitude towards physical activity.
We are committed to providing an increasingly diverse and challenging menu of activities here at St Peter’s and where possible ensure that these are accessible to children of all abilities.
At St Peter's, we aim for our pupils to:
Develop a positive attitude towards physical activity and health.
Learn safe practices, in particular responding to instructions and learning how to lift, carry and place equipment safely.
Be actively engaged in a variety of activities including dance, games, gymnastics, athletics, swimming and outdoor adventure pursuits.
As well as an hour of weekly PE teaching, we offer our pupils the following:
Weekly hour long catch-up lessons for selected Key Stage 2 classes based on their needs.
Additional PE time for Key Stage 2 scheduled as ‘Active Lunchtimes’. Each class has an extra 30 minutes of PE delivered by the PE teaching assistant per week.
All children in KS2 take part in the Monday Marathon where they run, walk or jog for 8-10 minutes. This aims to increase pupils stamina as well as improve overall physical and mental wellbeing.
Additional PE lessons in various sports/activities may be provided by various coaches across Tower Hamlets, including dance, cricket, hockey and tennis.
A Winter Sports Event is organised each year to encourage children to stay active and give all pupils the chance to try something new. This is usually led by an inspiring professional GB athlete!
‘Active Grammar’ is taken up by KS2 classes to supplement their grammar learning in a fun and physical manner.
An annual school Sports Day is organised for children to compete across a range of activities.
Opportunities to participate in organized sport competitions throughout the year.
A residential school trip for Year 6 pupils, where they spend part of the time partaking in outdoor and adventurous activities.
A wide range of lunchtime and after school sports clubs are available to Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children each week.
A range of sports equipment is made available in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 playgrounds to encourage physical play.
